Good read about the mongols, dispelling some myths and giving a good account of that period. I sort of disliked that the author was a bit too much of a cheerleader, trying in my opinion too hard to paint Genghis Khan on a positive light, even when talking about some very gruesome practices of him.
All too often history is stale, or greatly generalized and sanitized. This rather is a wonderful read as well as interesting history that we didn't learn much about in school. And what we learnt was quite wrong. A great book!
It's been a long time since I've been this entertained by a non-fiction book. Well written and researched. I'm planning on reading it again to get my head around all the details it mentions.
das buch ist ein wahnsinn. absolut spannend geschrieben, mit viel liebe zum detail und authentischer berichterstattung. das interesse des autors an den gigantischen auswirkungen des mongolischen weltreichs ist durch die niemals ermüdend wirkende, augenöffnende und herrlich erfrischende erzählart sehr ansteckend. nach dem lesen habe ich mich mit einer mongolin getroffen, und nachdem wir eien zeitlang über ihre geschichte gesprochen haben, und sie mich gefragt hat, woher ich das alles weiss, hat sie mir das buch sofort an ort und stelle abgekauft.
Having read several books on the Mongolian Empire recently, I can say, this is one of the best. To my knowledge it was also one of the first dealing with (and disproving) popular prejudices such as the "millions" killed in cities which actually only had a few hundred thousand citizens. What makes this book particularly worth reading is the authors in-depth knowledge from on-the-ground research.
