I know (knew) nothing about Ancient Rome. This book (a deeply researched, fictionalized account of true events) was recommended to me by someone I know and I'm so glad for that. The story is filled with adventure (battles), romance (this guy loves his family!), political intrigue (it is Rome, after all) and personal conflict/soul-searching. What kept me going was the perfectly placed but concise explanations of terms, practices, ancient Roman culture about which I was fairly uneducated. It was like Dan Wallace read my mind and bailed me out just when I thought I was irretrievably lost in unfamiliar territory. That and the overwhelming need to know what happens next . If you're a fan of I Claudius, or Reign, or Wolf Hall (or none of these) you should love this book. I say, bring on the sequel!
Tribune of the People is an epic work worthy of Cecil B. DeMille in its "cinematic-like" scope and realistic vision of ancient Rome. That Rome of long ago passes vividly before you eyes, ears, nose, and all your senses through the author's adept use of language. Even the food and wine are recreated with great verisimilitude. You'll be surprised. But let me add that you forget where you are when reading the book and you really ARE back in ancient Rome. It's amazing. At times Tribune enthralled me like Homer's Illiad with its detailed, at times graphic, depiction of war, heroism, and honor to one's country or higher cause. Other times it put me in mind of the Odyssey with its intricate subplots of love, passion, family life, and the eternal, ever-relevant hero's journey. The research that must have been done to turn out such a volume is rare these days where so many authors fail to do their homework. Yet, what I loved about reading Tribune was how it is so engaging, never dry, you don't feel that any of it is contrived. It is so skillfully woven a tale with the characters, primary and secondary, are well drawn. There is a lot of humor and comic relief, thank the many Roman gods. You really get attached to the main protagonist Tiberius Gracchus and his family you keep turning the page, cheering for him, suffering with him, and wondering what next surprise (pleasant or otherwise) awaits him. At times you realize that politics of today are not much different from ancient times, along with all the manipulative, self-serving, dirty tricks. The supporters of the people (the Plebeians) and those of the privileged class (Patricians) are readily reminiscent of the same agendas of today's Liberals & Conservatives (I won't name which party is which but you will get it). Of course, there is a direct line from our current government back to the Romans (and the Greeks, who figure in this epic too).
Tribune of the People is a great yarn, a well-told page-turner about Ancient Rome. The story focuses on one individual, tracing his career at the center of Rome's military exploits and political life in the second century BCE, but it is peopled with a wide assortment of believable and empathetic characters, most treated with deep humanity and sympathy. Villains abound, as well, and copious amounts of blood are spilled in this recreation of a violent epoch. The author's skillful portrayal of Ancient Roman life and the city itself help create a feeling of intimacy with the narrative. The unfamiliar becomes familiar. I found the book hard to put down and was sorry when I reached the end.
Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus is my kind of hero. What makes him even more prominent is the time frame in which he lived. Most Roman boys were expected to become soldiers... They trained from early life and stood along their friends as they expected a similar future. Tiberius had extra pressure being the son of an important plebian father who had since died. His mother, it seemed to me, looked to Tiberius to take over and provide the honor and esteem that came to the family due to her late husband. But Tiberius stood out from his peers in one important way...he cared about people. In fact, he spends much turmoil trying to understand the need to not only win a war against a chosen city or people, but to totally destroy and kill or enslave everybody. One thing I should point out immediately, Wallace has created an outstanding historical novel true to the time period. Considerable research has obviously been done... His character names, the terminology of the period, as well as events that are comparable to what indeed took place are meticulously provided. For history lovers, they will happily sink into Tribune of the People. Forgive me for not using the appropriate language, except in quotes...For me it was not a novel I enjoyed reading--it speaks to the very things that goes against my beliefs--war and all that it entails. However, because of the role Tiberius plays to change history at that time, it is well worth reading and has much to offer in relation to today's world...The novel starts with Tiberius' first campaign...if this were a mystery, I would have picked up on the clues that things that happened were not exactly what had been planned! Indeed, when, under the leadership of Tiberius, his men were first "over the wall" and were immediately applauded by the other soldiers... It is quite obvious to readers that Tiberius was an honorable man. Everybody was saying that he was first over the wall...and that won him the Mural Crown, which produced anguish for many, especially his brother-in-law Scipio. It was quite clear that I could immediately identify him as the one of the villains...But for Tiberius, he was appalled at what took place after Carthage was captured. What Tiberius had seen began the change in him.. A change that would bring about much inner turmoil for him. But in the end, he had to stand true to what he believed. Tiberius had left the ruins of Carthage as a young, inexperienced soldier. He knew he would be required to continue to be involved with Rome's desire to seek more and more from their war efforts. In his mother's eyes, she expected nothing less... With his own inner desires to succeed in his work, he knew he would face similar scenes in the future. But then he got married; how would a family change him further?? Only one thing kept arising in his thoughts...something had to be done about the lower classes of Rome and those who faced the wrath of Roman soldiers at the time of their being conquered...and the death of so many soldiers during these wars...When he next was to be sent to Numantia in Hispania, his actions began to respond to his personal feelings of honor... Could he hold true to his personal standards of conduct against all who opposed him?Follow his life through major changes as they came. with Tiberius being in the thick of much of what happened in the future... Highly recommended, especially for those who enjoy historical novels...based upon actual events...GABixlerReviewsPaperback provided by Publisher
